SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: The collection contains records of the President’s Office created during the administration of Sr. Augustine Scheele dating from 1948 to 1968. The collection largely consists of annual reports, correspondence, meeting minutes, grant files, committee files, personnel files, program files, and a large variety of subject files. The records concern accreditation, general policy issues, plans for physical expansion of the college and moving the college to S. 39th St., financial issues, consortia memberships and organization memberships, sister formation, staffing, and other administrative affairs.
ARRANGEMENT: The files are arranged alphabetically by personal name, by name of Alverno Department, or by subject; and then chronologically. Files may contain a variety of materials including correspondence, memoranda, reports, or newspaper clippings.
ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: In 1948 three School Sisters of St. Francis institutions: Alverno Teacher’s College, Alverno College of Music, and Sacred Heart School of Nursing began the process of merging to form Alverno College. Sr. Augustine Scheele, then Assistant Dean of Alverno Teacher’s College, was appointed as the first president for the merged institution in January 1948. She held that post until 1968. During the time of her administration, she embarked Alverno on a program of academic and physical expansion. She administered the relocation of Alverno in 1953 from its former home at 1501 S. Layton Blvd., to a new campus of 52 acres located between 39th and S. 43rd sts. and W. Morgan and W. Euclid aves., comprising five units of new buildings and the subsequent construction of five additional buildings, the latest of which was the $1,300,000 Nursing Education Building completed in 1967. Sr. Augustine also oversaw the accreditation and reaccreditation of all programs the College offered by respective agencies such as the North Central Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Finally, during her administration the student body changed from majority religious to majority lay and the governing board of the college, known as the Board of Trustees, changed its makeup from solely religious--limited to members of The School Sisters of St. Francis--to majority lay with a broad representation from the professions, alumnae, business and industry.
