Research Center for Women and Girls

Reading together, discussing together, viewing together, planning together, sponsoring speakers, brown bag sessions and research, although not as visible as in the early years, the Research Center on Women and its Interest Group (now known as the Feminist Education Advisory Group (FEAG) to avoid confusion,) continued to play a vital role in the Alverno Community. Back in the limelight again and with a new name, it has come full circle with a newly remodeled space in Clare Hall.

On October 23, 1996, the RCW sponsored an evening of film, food and conversation when the group viewed together the film, Antonia's Line.

RCW sponsored another evening of film on March 12, 1997.

RCW was one of the sponsors when Myra Stober, labor economist, professor of Education at Stanford University and founding director of the Stanford Center for Research on Women spoke on Combining Work and Family in Your Life: What it Takes to Have an Egalitarian Family at Alverno on March 24, 2000.

On March 27-29, 2000, RCW brought a national teleconference, "Women's Lives, Women's Voices, Women's Solutions: Shaping a National Agenda for Women in Higher Education" from the University of Minnesota. Alverno had its own caucus discussions in response. |

RCW sponsored a brown bag session with Alverno College Democrats and Alverno College Republicans on "Women in Politics on April 19, 2001.
On November 1, 2001, RCW and the Multicultural Issues Office co-sponsored the first "Student-Faculty-Staff" Roundtable discussion in response to September 11, 2001. Within about a year, the Roundtable became a student-run activity open to the entire college community with Zohreh Emami as faculty mentor. In April 2003, RCW was one of the Alverno organizations that brought Zainab Salbi, President of Women for Women International, to speak at Alverno. Her visit is described in the Alpha article below.

Kay Maxwell, President of the League of Women Voters in the United States, was a guest speaker at Alverno on November 19, 2003. RCW was one of the sponsors.

In Fall 2007, the first Status of Girls in Wisconsin report was released by Alverno College, Girls Scouts of Milwaukee Area, Inc., Girls Scouts of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Women's Council, and the Women's Fund of Greater Milwaukee. The Alverno research team included Sandra Graham, Chair; Megan Kemmet, Primary Research Coordinator; Russell Brooker; Austin Doherty; Kimberly Miller; Kathleen O'Brien; Julie Rice; and Julie Ullman. An update of the report is scheduled to be released in April 2010.

April 10-11 2008, RCW sponsored a visit by Elizabeth Minnich to campus. She participated as a panel member in a Thursday evening "Alverno Debates" session, "American Woman: You've Come a Long Way?" and a Friday afternoon workshop for Alverno Faculty.

Alverno's Research Center for Women and Girls had a week-long series of grand opening events in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary of the original Research Center on Women at Alverno, April 7-14, 2010.

Alverno's new weekday major and support in Women's and Gender Studies began in Fall 2010.

In Fall 2011, Rhonda Matthews Ware was appointed Executive Director of the Research Center for Women and Girls. An article about her appeared in the Spring 2012 issue of Alverno Magazine.
